Hrmm.. Was the comparison you posted for /dev/video1 ? A black and white
'cat test' usually means the input is off.. i.e., Composite 1 instead of
composite 4 (at least mine's composite 4 for S-video.)
I'd suggesting posting to the ivtv list for some better debugging...

Yes, sorry, I didn't state that clearly in my original. I definitely was
doing -d /dev/video1
