[mythtv-users] background questions

OK- just ordering my capture cards and I have another couple questions. 
I have plenty of processor in this machine, so would I be reducing the
quality of my recordings if I go with the PVR 250 because it will only
record MPEG 2?  Am I better off going with a "dumber" input card and
letting my processor do all the encoding but in a better format?  Any
recommendations?
