I run xfree 4.3.0 from mdk (XFree86-4.3-24.1.92mdk) using the radeon  
driver (ie not the proprietary driver from ati). I even have 3d running  
well with the free driver (for this you have to take a DRI snapshot,  
but you don't need 3d support for myth). I am running a CVS version of  
myth post-0.14 (but this won't be the solution for you as 0.14 was also  
working really well for me).
Try the radeon driver (in general for 2d the xfree drivers are really  
excellent).
