MPEG4 (divx/xvid) play fine - IIRC sub 50p/c CPU on my M12000. I haven't
really tried DVD yet; the few I did put in the drive complained about
bad format title (or some such) which I was surprised about and must be
either codec or possibly drive.

Where did you find this info? I've not tried to play any music yet but
am a little curious as to why this may be.
I understand that (despite the board's target audience) s-video output
is pretty bad compared with what it should be (ie apparently composite
and s-video are similar), but I don't have a specially wonderful tv to
see the difference :)
