Just a quick tip having read your document which others may find useful:

If you're building an IR transmitter and need to see if the IR LED is
functioning use the viewfinder of a digital camera (or camcorder), these
pick up and show IR light quite clearly (at least I haven't come across one
yet that doesn't). Saves mucking around swapping LED's and shows you that
you've got the polarity of your IR LED correct. Test your camera first by
viewing a working remote from your TV/whatever.
