If that¹s the case, then how do I use the homebrew receiver with the 2188
atrpms  kernel?  What is the best way to manipulate the driver to get the
homebrew receiver working on com1?

The ATrpms lirc supports homebrew IR receivers already...

But "rpm -e lirc lirc-lib kernel-module-lirc-`uname -r`" would remove all
the 
 ATrpms lirc components.
