for the complete darkness, it does seem to be a kernel V4L bug, so I 
don't think the mythTV developers can fix that.  It did just start 
happening to me in the last 6 months, like kernel 2.6.3.  See if you 
have the problem when watching tvtime, and if it is still a problem, you 
may need to file it as a bug with the kernel developers or your distro.  
You can see if this is a problem with the newest kernel versions.  I 
don't think its a problem with 2.6.1 or so, and probably not a problem 
with 2.4.x.  It seems that when you read from /dev/vbi and the info is 
not there, /dev/video gets screwed up until you change the channel.  For 
a lot of people its an easy option to turn off vbi/CC/XDS support, but 
in your case, we should work to get this sorted out and fixed.
