First, is /dev/hdc your cd-rom drive? Usually it's /dev/cdrom or
something along those lines. Were you trying to play mp3's from the hard
drive or from a cd (as your post states).
If from your cd drive, first make sure it's not auto-mounting when you
insert a disk (through KDE). Jarod mention's this in his guide:

See the part in MythDVD about automounting, if you are using KDE. If
not, adjust accordingly for other WM's
