I have not had success with MythTV transcoding HDTV files, but I've been
using a combination of ProjectX and 'transcode' to do it.

I have had success using a couple other tools. Currently, I use
ProjectX (took me a while to get through the German documentation and
support) to cut commercials and demux the ac3 stream and the MPEG2
video from the MPEG-TS (Transport Stream) in the .nuv file. It does
some nice error correction along the way. Once I get the two demuxed
files, I use transcode to put them back together, and shrink them to a
manageble Xvid file. I also reduce the resolution by two (960x540). I
have had some success doing this. I'm not the most accomplished
transcode user so I'm not sure I'm getting the best results from my
work. Also, there just aren't a lot of people out there transcoding
HDTV on Linux yet. I've exprimented with quite a few settings for
transcode to get the best quality XviD file, so if you want some tips,
let me know. My main problem is that swift pans can look kind of
jerky. I don't know how to get them to smooth out.
