Sorry for the typo.  Guess I should have gone to bed before 3:49 am

You don't need another copy of LIRC for a homebrew 
receiver/transmitter.  Assuming it's all wired correctly, you have the 
correct permissions on sockets (i.e. /dev/lircd), and the proper 
configuration files (i.e. /etc/lircd.conf), the transmitter should work.

Without more info (i.e. error messages, observed behavior, types of 
tests you performed (i.e. using a color LED, commands issued, etc.), 
system configuration diagnostics (i.e. output of lsmod, ls -al 
/dev/lirc*, ), it would be very difficult to guess what is causing the 
problem.
