[mythtv-users] Dual PVR250s + NFS = dropped frames

A couple things you might want to try....

In the nfs mount options, change the 'soft' to 'hard'

Add option 'tcp'

Make sure the file system on your NFS server has 'noatime' specified.

What speed is your LAN? 10Mbps? 100Mpbs? 1000Mpbs? If less than 100,
think about upgrading. If 100, consider going to Gigabit (1000Mbps).

Do you have DMA turned on for the disks in your NFS server?

How much RAM in your NFS server? Consider increasing it.

What filesystem are you using on your NFS server? If XFS, what is the
processor speed?

Are you using RAID4 or 5 on the NFS filesysem? Don't for the Recordings
directory. RAID 4 or 5 is fine for the videos and music directories.

I use a similar setup. My NFS server share consists of 6 160GB striped with
RAID1, 1GB RAM, 1.7Ghz Celeron, Gigabit LAN, 32K rsize and wsize.

Good luck.

Subject: [mythtv-users] Dual PVR250s + NFS = dropped frames

Hi,

I currently have 2 PVR-250s in my backend (P3 1GHz, 320MB ram, 27GB disk)
and access all my Myth stuff via NFS mounts.

I increased the NFS block size to 64k, but when I try to record two shows
at once, I still get a pretty significant amount of dropped frames.

# cat /etc/fstab | grep mythtv
stratosphere.internal.unshift.net:/var/local/mythtv /var/local/mythtv nfs
rsize=65536,wsize=65536,soft,nfsvers=3 0 0

I really can't figure out how to solve this problem, except for some sort
of rip/rsync type of hack.

I'm also looking into channel bonding on both machines, to effectively get
200Mbit worth of bandwidth. I'd consider moving to Gigabit, except that
requires all sorts of new and expensive equipment...

Anyhow, just wondering if anyone's run into this problem, or even if
someone who hasn't cares to chime in.

Thanks in advance,
     - Matt
