du adds all filesizes together, and substracts that from the total diskspace. 
df lists the free space.

'modern' Linux filesystems (say ext2 and later) reserve 'some space' for root 
only, so root should be able to log in even if the disk is full, and that 
there always is some free space (less file fragmentation) etc. The 'some 
space' can be quite substantial on the drives we currently use.
