Maybe you don't have settings in your lircrc file for the player you are 
using for videos (xine, mplayer, ??). Note that mythtv uses 
~/.mythtv/lircrc whereas other programs usually use ~/.lircrc

On my system I use a softlink to link  the two
$ ln -s ~/.mythtv/lircrc .lircrc
