I don't think you need to rebuild the kernel, the serial module is
already modularized for lirc preparation (which is technically not
needed, but makes things easier).
lirc @ ATrpms is my personal PITA. Unfortunatley there is no clean way
to build lircdfor multiple devices, but the libs and kernel modules
seem to be already device independent.
I suggest to only build lirc and test it. If that works, please test
with ATrpms' libs and kernel drivers for lirc and your own lircd.
Don't forget to post a request at the lirc list to show that a device
independent build is needed. The ratio of such requests here and on
the lirc list seem to be 50:1 (the one is my post there ;), so it's no
suprise the lirc developers feel that it is not urgend enough.
