What is the Capture volume set to? You need to have that slider cranked
up a bit. If its at zero, you're capturing audio at zero volume. Just a
guess, since you didn't mention the capture slider...
As for the line in not working, are you sure it isn't one of those
things where its set as a rear-channel output, either in the bios, with
mobo jumpers, or by the audio drivers? I've seen check boxes in the
bottom portion of gnome-alsamixer for "use line in as rear channel out"
or something like that with the onboard sound on some systems...
