In my experience, the stock X radeon driver is mediocre, while ATI's fglrx 
driver hard-locked my machine on occasion. Never tried gatos.

Lots and lots and lots of reading on AVSForum.com plus trial and error. I 
still need to tweak it some more to reduce the overscan, if possible.

Well, that's a good thing. Perhaps its a less processor-intensive scale for 
that mode, who knows. Not sure why you're getting any jerkiness at all 
though. My picture is generally excellent and free of jerks. Is that on live 
TV, recordings, or both? (I don't use live TV much anymore).
