So...you are hooking up the digital cable coax straight out of the wall
into your PVR?  Or from your cable converter box?

What happened when you did this step:

# cat /dev/video0 > /tmp/test_capture.mpg
(ctrl-c to stop capture)

"Use that copy of mplayer you installed a bit ago to view the capture. If
you get something that looks and sounds intelligible, then congrats,
you've got ivtv set up!"
