Good summary.

However, file is (or can be) smarter than it's programers made it. It uses
several user editable files to determine the file type. Addidn a "new"
filetype is actually quite simple.

The man page for the version I am looking at (FreeBSD) does not reference
GNU, but I believe there is a GNU version. If so, it might make sense to
contribute identifyng information on these files to the GNU project, so
that it can recognize them.
