When doing the original setup, you create a single
capture card (the 250) and I used the tuner0 as the
default.  Next you create the two video sources, cable
and direct tv. Lastly you "tie" the input connections
together: cable->tuner0 and compositeN->direct tv.  I
think for my 250, the composite number was composite4.
YMMV

The two video sources keeps the schedules separate. 
However, you may want to limit one or the other (using
"not" in the *appropriate*.xmltv file) when you fill
the database otherwise you end up with duplicate
channels in your program guide.

So yes, it keeps the two schedules separate and
"knows" which input to record from.
