I would only add that since the duty cycle is very low (only around 25%
when transmitting) for the LED, he can likely get away with a resistor
that would exceed the current ratings of the LED by more than 100%.
Even more likely, depending upon the LED, no resistor at all will
probably be fine.  Just make sure the lens isn't turning brown over
time.  ;-D  As always YMMV.

It's not the "blowing up" that hurts, it's letting the magic smoke out
that breaks things.  ;-)
