It's been my experience that large numbers of IP packet errors cause
Linux and windos much grief. Linux can be made to spit kernel messages
at a high rate and windos, of course, blue screens. One time I switched
a Novell server out and replaced it with Linux. At first I couldn't
figure out what was causing all the problems. Upon investigation, I
replaced about two dozen "silver satin" telephone patch cords that the
customer had installed himself. To make matters worse, they had a hub
and not a switch to compound the problem. Fortunately the rest of the
network wiring was done right. After changing out the cords, everything
worked perfectly. Apparently IPX can withstand the constant errors,
TCP/IP doesn't do quite so well.
