[mythtv-users] where the *%$ is that list of supported cards?

Try

         /[path_to_kernel_source]/Documentation/video4linux/bttv/CARDLIST

for the list of cards supported by the bttv kernel module. That works for 
Linux 2.4.20, at least ... if 2.4.23 has, for example, the ivtv stuff 
added, I don't know where it might have put info on supported cards for 
that module.
