I don't have a PVR 250, but I do have a scratch-built receiver. It plugs 
into the serial port and works very well.

Advantages: huge range (much wider angle), and any remote works with it. 
I've got a programmable remote, and I think "volume up for Technics amp" 
currently means "delete" :)
Disadvantages: soldering. The circuit is not very complex, though.
