[mythtv-users] All nvidia you can take for Red Hat Linux/Fedora Core

Happy new year.

I am getting quite a few diverging requests for nvidia drivers, mythtv
needs 4363 (anyone care to comment on whether 5328 is equally suited),
GL gamers ask for 4496, some like the nvidia-setting app from 4620.

I myself found 5328 to half glxgears performance, but that was on a
TNT2 (dropping from 144 frames to 72, please don't laugh ;). On an
GeForce FX Go5200 X looks O.K., but the console is doing funny things
(ghosting of the console at the margins, vertical white stripes etc.)

Anyway the nvidia rpms have been redesigned to allow concurrent
installation. So you can install all of 4363/4496/4620/5328 and switch
to your liking (see notes below). This allows also to keep Mesa libs
installed.

All nvidia rpms can be found under
http://atrpms.physik.fu-berlin.de/name/nvidia-graphics/
in pairs of
- a non-kernel rpm (nvidia-graphics is the latest, e.g. 5328, the
older ones have the version attached to their name),
- and lots of kmdls (kernel module rpms), e.g.

    nvidia-graphics-kmdl-2.4.22-1.2135.nptl_27.rhfc1.at-1.0_5328-45.rhfc1.at.i686.rpm

for 5328 on an ATrpms v4l2 kernel for Fedora Core 1/i686 or

    nvidia-graphics4363-kmdl-smp-2.4.20-27.7-1.0_4363-45.rh7.3.at.athlon.rpm

for 4363 on a RH kernel for Red Hat Linux 7.3/athlon/smp.

Every (non-kmdl) rpm contains nvidia-graphics-switch:
> # nvidia-graphics-switch
> Usage: /usr/bin/nvidia-graphics-switch <driver>
> where <driver> is one of 4363 4496 4620 5328

Drop out of X, remove any nvidia-xxx modules, switch to another nvidia
driver and restart X,
e.g.
init 3
rmmod `lsmod | grep ^nvidia | awk '{print $1}'`
nvidia-graphics-switch 5328
init 5

Note that if you never call nvidia-graphics-switch, the last rpm
installed/upgraded will be selected. Make sure you do use
nvidia-graphics-switch after installing/upgrading multiple nvidia
drivers.

Enjoy, and give some feedback about their suitability on mythtv and
general.
