[mythtv-users] Transcoding settings advice

Greetings and Happy New Year,

I recently upgraded to a mightier PC for MythTV, and I thought I'd look into
transcoding.

I'm a bit at a loss, however.

I'm using a PVR-250, so I've got MPEG2 files, so I believe I should be
configuring the transcoder profile under "MPEG2," right?

Currently, I'm recording at about a 4000 bitrate at 720x480, but any
configuration change I make to the MPEG2 transcoding settings seems to yield
very blocky, low-quality results - even if I pump the bitrate up well above
the original (which doesn't make sense, but I tried for argument's sake).
I've got the quality set at full, with minimum three below that, and I've
tried various combinations of the three option checkboxes on that same page.

Is anyone else doing transcoding from MPEG2 with good results? Perhaps they
could tip me off as to their settings, which I could use as a base for
further experimentation? I would be grateful.

Then, there's always the possibility that I'm not applying the settings in
the right spot, so, I would be grateful for correction in this area, too.

Thanks very much,
DAM
