Acoustic management seems to be completely disabled in the drive's firmware, 
with no way to turn it on.

That's certainly not true.  My slightly older 'cuda V in the same machine 
doesn't do anything like this (think _very_ heavy harddrive thrashing noise 
every few minutes when idle).
