Did you happen to use an ebuild for mythtv?

I'm receiving the same symptoms.

Here are some details:
Gentoo Linux (gentoo-kerner) 2.4.22-gentoo-r5
Hauppague PVR250
Nvidia GF440 TV-Out (works beautifully BTW)
Kernel compiled with AGPART, but module removed for testing
  - Low Latency Scheduling
  - Non-Preemptible
  - I2C bit-banging interfaces
  - Video For Linux (as Module)

ALSA sound drivers (nforce snd-intel8x0) using spdif out
1.0.2c

MythTV

Running CVS from 2 days ago.
Compiled with alsa, ivtv, lirc, and xvmc (turned off in config because
it cased playback problems)

IVTV
0.1.9 tarball installed

Module config...

alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias char-major-61 lirc_i2c
options ivtv debug=1
options tuner type=2
options msp3400 once=1 simple=1 standard=0x20
add below ivtv msp3400 saa7115 tuner
add above ivtv lirc_dev lirc_i2c

All other related duplicated modules removed as per documentation.

After a couple of hours the backend goes up to approx 100% utilization.
I'm having another frontend problem, but that will wait for later.
