[mythtv-users] Digital Out on Sound Blaster Live! Card

A mono cable won't do you any good...your sound will be all screwed up. I
got a stereo mini to stereo RCA. If they make a stereo mini to Digital
COAX...then you should be good though. Otherwise I'm not sure what kind of
output you'll get...

Well, by digital coax I meant a single RCA cable as is used by some DVD
players to output 5.1. The signal itself is in a digital form. The documents
I have read said to use a mono miniplug adapter and a single RCA cable. I
think I'll give this a shot this weekend when I have some free time.

I spoke to the guys at Radio Shack about it...and this is what they pointed
out to me. Said it's sole purpose was to connect a PC's sound card to a
stereo receiver. Of course we didn't get into the technical specs of the
thing....so that very well may be correct. This cable is analog to analog
as far as I can tell though. Not Digital COAX. Just mini to dual RCA (good
ole red/white).

I read about doing it that way (minijack to digital coax) but a couple posts
on various boards mentioned that the signal being sent isn't correct and can
damage your receiver. They say that it sends a 5V signal instead of a 500mV
like a standard SPDIF. Any one know any truth behind this? Otherwise I'll
just do it this way myself.

I've got a hoontech on order, but I may not need it. I picked up a mini to
RCA adapter from Radio Shack instead.....sounds pretty good.

So if anyone is looking for a Hoontech adapter....let me know ;-)

It is also possible to use the Hoontech add-on card to SB-Live (and other
creative cards).

The have made a few different add-on cards, depending upon which sound card
you have.

I bought such a card for what would translate to about 30USD, and is running
optical between my surround reciever and the myth box - works like a charm.

Cheers
Jesper
