[mythtv-users] DVD-ROM digital audio cable

A quick somewhat off-topic question...

I just purchased a DVD-ROM for one of my Myth boxes. It has both a 2 pin
digital audio connector and a 4 pin analog. This box has an Asus A7S333
mainboard with an on-board s/pdif connector (6 pins / 5 real), which is
meant to connect to the external digital connector plate. According to
the docs, 1 of those pins is input and another is output. Is it possible
to hook up the DVD-ROM's digital connection to this along with the
plates external out? Is there any benefit to using the digital cable
over an analog from the DVD-ROM? One more question... why are these
audio cables even necessary? Why isn't the audio just sent of the IDE
channel with the video data?

Sorry if these are lame questions.

Thanks,
Joe
