If he lacks a volt-meter, it's probably worth following your advice and
putting in a bigger resistor and trying it - if he doesn't get the range
he needs then he can always swap the resistor. It's a bit of trial and
error. Also depends on the LED of course - some of the really bright ones
have got excessively high current ratings anyway :)
