For the transmitter I used the diode, resistor and LED connected between
DTR and ground. Didn't see the need for the amplified one - the LED is
mounted right on the front of the sky box so no huge amount of power is
needed, and you won't blow a serial port even if you short the whole thing
out since RS232 ports are all buffered and current limited (or at least if
you do blow it then it must've been a really badly designed port :)

I'm afraid I don't have the part numbers I used - it was built out of
components I had kicking around anyway. A quick flick through the Maplin
catalogue shows these should do the job though:

Code	Description Price
- -------------------------------------
YH70M	Infra-Red Emitter	0.49
QL80B	1N4148 Signal Diode	0.08
M1K	1K Resistor 0.07
RK61R	D 9-way Socket 0.79

I can remember that the IR receiver circuit has a receiver IC that was
bought from RS because Maplin didn't do them (Maplin have really gone down
hill - 6 or 7 years ago they sold absolutely everything).
