Definately depends on the DVD player.

My Apex PD-650 will play DVDs authored with 480x480 MPEG with a normal aspect
ratio.  The Rowa DVD-3610 downstairs will not.

Overall the Rowa sucks.  :)  But it is still one of the two best devices in the
house for viewing MPEG video.  I don't know what kind of scaler it uses, but
both the Rowa and my PD-650 do an amazing job with 352x240 VCDs.  Xine, on the
other hand, makes them pretty ugly with lots of macroblocking artifacts.  (I
don't know how it's possible that the hardware decoders are hiding the
macroblocking, since it's usually a function of the encoder...)
