Ditto.. I switched from the via82cxx to the alsa driver and the
'schtick-schtick-schtick-schtick-schtick' (til reboot) problem went away.

I got the same. Mplayer worked, but MythMusic and mpg123 didn't.

Correct: 82C686 in combination with OSS drivers and MythMusic -> always
crashed

And indeed: using ALSA drivers solved this problem for me
