If you're having so many difficulties with ALSA, it's entirely possible that no one here in the MythTV newsgroup knows the solution to your problem. Have you even considered asking over in the ALSA mailing lists? Or, like you said, you can buy a Tivo. No one is forcing you to use MythTV.
