Have you tried setting horizontal (?HorizRefresh?) and vertical
(?VertSync?) frequency in your XF86Config? When Xfree86 is unable to query
the DDC values from the monitor it will fall back to those frequency values
to eleminate impossible resolutions. If you don't set them it will go into
some sort of 'safe mode' at 640x480.
