I found one more thing that might help you to indetify the problem:

After I kill mythfrontend, mythbackend gives the next message
strange error flushing buffer ...  <----- This is when I select livetv
2004-02-02 16:10:04 Changing from WatchingLiveTV to None
Can't read vbi data
