- Keep the frontend running all the time.
- When the frontend starts up, don't bother connecting to the backend 
immediately - wait until the user does something (presses a button or 
whatever)
- After a preset idle time the frontend disconnects and will wait until 
the user does something again before reconnecting.

That way, when the machine is idle, the backend will shut it down and if 
it wakes up to make a recording and the user isn't pressing buttons then 
the frontend will never reconnect so the backend can still shutdown after 
the recording as normal.  There are also no shutdown buttons that the user 
has to remember to press (although there could be a "disconnect" button on 
the frontend that the user can press to speed up the whole process).

This conversation is probably better on the myth-dev list so I've CC'd it 
there.
