Hi Gavin, thanks for the response.  Here's some more information:

Capture card - Hauppauge pvr 350 (new one with tuner type 47 )
ivtv driver - ivtv-0.3.1s (ckennedy)
Distribution - Slackware 9.1


Movie file names:
(I've recorded and deleted a couple of shows, so the names are different
from the last example)
