Yes and yes. Buy yourself a learning remote and you won't even have to 
reconfigure LIRC. I'm using a Philips remote to control my Myth box, my 
Creative livedrive (though not under Linux yet, grr), my stereo, and the TV 
and VCR and PS2 in the lounge.
