Since this should "never" happen, how about "ALT-SHIFT-F1" to get to the 
text mode console, and then from there:

DISPLAY=:0 xterm &

ALT-F7 to get back into X?

I do that a lot even *with* kde and an xterm shortcut on my desktop... 
so I'm not bothered by the front end while its running
