Thanks for the help on this so far - really appreciated.
I found alsactl where you (bjm) said, and when I called it with an
explicit path it worked, just wasn't working without the path specified
for some reason... Thanks.
In continuation of my glitch - all settings seem correct, live (line)
audio works, and I'm assuming it's using the correct /dev/dsp, since
selecting dsp1 or 56k results in no sound, as opposed to the "pop" when
using /dev/dsp. You (bjm) mentioned starting from command line, which I
did. I got the OK from the backend, and the front end returned (after I
tried watching liveTV):

One previous post regarding audio referred to turning off internal
volume control - didn't seem to matter - still just "pops" when
starting/changing channels/etc. (I plan to not use internal unless
necessary)... When I tried using internal volume control, messages
included (instead of "OSS" and "XV port 105" lines):
Setting master volume: : Invalid argument
Setting PCM volume: : Invalid argument
Reading PCM volume: : Invalid argument
In checking the archives for those errors, I found a couple references,
but none were quite what I'm getting, or at least I didn't understand
them that way. Since it didn't seem to have an effect on output anyway
and a suggested fix was to simply turn off internal control, I'm not
sure how much to pursue this.
Any ideas on what to check/change next? I'm beginning to consider trying
a KnoppMyth install, since it takes less time to start from scratch than
it has taken chasing this problem around. Any chance that'd work right
off the bat (so far I like FC1, but it's been a bit more work than I
expected).
