OK, I've got it figured out!     It was actually a USB problem.   Nothing
USB was working.  I had the UHCI module compiled with the kernel, but as it
turns out I was missing the OHCI module.   I figured this out as I was
comparing USB functionality of my 2.6 version with that of my working 2.4
kernel.

It's always the last thing you check, huh?!    :)
