OK, if you put it like that, that sounds weird. Perhaps something in the
xvid codec has changed? (That's where the CPU power goes)

recording 1 hr of rtjpeg at 210 gives you a ~8g file, which will go away
once mythtranscode is done.

I was curious, installed/fired up knoppmythR4(myth0.12) on a spare
partition, and the settings you describe took 76% CPU just recording
(avertv stero BT878, set box at 180x10/athlonXP.(cas 2 Kensingtom HyperX
memory, but rev 1 NF2, FIC AU11) 

I effectively have 2 frontends---One on my PC, and the Xbox under the
big rear projection Phillips in the LR.

Seems knoppmyth has been updated from R4---have to take another look.
