It sounds like your doing alright so far.  I've seen those sgml catalog errors as well, but it doesn't seem to effect anything.  If your getting the RPM database errors, try this as root:

# rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
# rpm -vv --rebuilddb

You don't mention whether or not you are following Jarod's guide, but if you are just learning, and are doing an install on Fedora Core 1, I HIGHLY reccommend it.  Visit http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php for detailed install instructions.
