I also went the httpd.conf <Directory> route. Here's how to do it.
Edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
Immediately following the closing Directory tag for the /var/www/html
Directory (around line 329) insert a new Directory element:
<Directory "/var/www/html/mythweb">
AuthType Basic
AuthName "MythWeb"
AuthUserFile /etc/httpd/conf/passwords
require valid-user
</Directory>
While your in httpd.conf, you may want to modify the line that reads
"Listen 80". Most ISPs block port 80 to keep bad people like us from
running servers. I changed mine to "Listen 8080".
Next, run the following command, as root:
# htpasswd -c /etc/httpd/conf/passwords mythtv
Change "mythtv" to whatever user you want to use. It will ask you for a
password, enter it (twice). Now simply do this:
# /etc/init.d/httpd restart
If you don't have a domain name, you may want to sign up for a free
redirect at http://www.no-ip.com - I use it and it works great. To hit
your server from the outside, just go to the URL:
http://<your ip address>:8080/mythweb
If your server is running on port 80, you don't need to put the port in
the URL.
Good luck ;-)
