Hauppauge Freestyle
720x480
4500 ave
6000 max
MPEG-2 PS
Audio at 48000
(Everything else is default, or as you describe)

I just receive regular broadcast quaility TV (via cable), no HD or digital
signals. I've been trying to come up with a couple of good profiles for
archival, and I think if I decrease the average bitrate above to around
4100, I'll be able to fit 3 one hour programs on a DVD (commercials cut).
I'm going for efficiency with a minimal sacrifice to quality.

For cartoons, I've been experimenting with recording at 352x480 at 3400-3700
average, just to try and fit 7 half-hour episodes on a DVD.

The slight loss in quality isn't very noticable to me on my 27" TV, and
while I don't mind cutting commercials, I really hate spending time to
re-encode and MPEG-2 stream to an MPEG-2 stream (just to reduce the
bitrate).
