[mythtv-users] Channel information: how to supply?

I have a basic question: how can do I specify the list of available
channels (I assume: channel name, frequency, frequency band, maybe 
icon)? Is there a configuration file somewhere or do I have to fill
the required entries into the database manually?

I'm using mythTV in a country (Switzerland) not supported by the 
setup wizard.

I assume here that XMLTV is not only used to get listing information, 
but also to get channel data. If no, then I don't quite understand
how mythTV obtains this information.

I tried using MythChannels, but it didn't work: I got it to compile
with yesterday's CVS snapshot of mythTV, but no plugin shows up on
the frontend UI. Also, I could not apply the supplied patch against
my CVS image and the database update would fail for some columns.

My system is running SuSE Linux 8.2.
