I still think you had two _different_ versions of lirc installed, and 
the modules that were taking precedence were the wrong ones.  If you had 
two versions of the _same_ lirc that happened to get installed to two 
different places it shouldn't have mattered, since internally everything 
would still have been correct, like module names, etc.

Like I said in an earlier email, "updatedb, then locate lirc_i2c" would 
have shown that you had more than one copy of lirc stuff sitting on your 
hard drive.

Glad it works though.
