yeah, my bad...   "thread" and "process" are usually synonymous in the
hardware world (talking about cpu cycles), as they are in windows
land..   linux pthreads are something completely different, and in linux
land, "thread" usually seems to refer to pthread threads.

anyway, I meant forking a new non-child process...  I figured that it
might be a nice separation from the backend (turn the main backend into
more of a server/monitor than an actual number cruncher), and allow
recording/playing processes to live in their own process - sort of like
how httpd and mysqld work.  But I don't really know much about this sort
of thing, so I'm just tossing ideas out - feel free to shoot them down.
