Actually, there is a way described in the Tivo setup manual to do both, watch
live TV and record a different show. They suggest that if your TV is cable
ready, that you use a splitter, direct on the cable coax line, so that one feeds
through the cable box into the Tivo and one feeds directly into an input on your
TV.

The one problem I can see is that without the cable box, the cable channels on
my TV are all screwy, so that instead of NBC being channel 11, it's channel 22,
etc.
